- The story of your business. Why did you decide to start the business and how long have you been running it?
Buddy & Riley is a wonderful passion project that started 8 month ago as a hobby after reading several awesome case studies and guides on running an online drop shipping business. After some research I came up with the niche of Pet Adventure Gear which has a number of pros:
-The pet industry itself is massive in terms of consumer spend $$, people love to purchase great products for their pets. -There’s an incredibly strong community (on Instagram and beyond) of dog owners who also love to explore, hiking, travel, and camp with their pets which means a huge pool of potential customers worldwide and high levels of engagement -There are a limited number of players in the arena which minimal competition and huge room to grow
I really believe this business can be highly profitable with a little bit of digital marketing love. Buddy & Riley has shown huge promise so far and can be phenomenally successful and grow as large as you’d like it to!

Describe the business model. Do you drop ship or hold the inventory yourself?
Buddy & Riley is run off a drop shipping model. The products come from AliExpress (using the automated Oberlo system, which is AMAZING!) and also an online Pet Retail Supply site that I have found to be really reliable and offer unique, high quality products. As soon as an order comes in we place the order via Oberlo or our PetRetailSupply wholesale account and it ships direct. Takes out all of the risk!
- What work have you already put into creating the business?
I’ve built the whole business from scratch: creating the website, sourcing the products, setting prices, liaising with influencers for content, building the Instagram following, setting up the automation, deploying and promoting the affiliate program, doing customer service, running digital advertising via email, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and Google Adwords, managing expenses, and all other strategy and business administration. It’s fully operational and ready to be taken to the next level!
- What have you done to attract customers? Here you can describe your store's marketing strategies ie. advertising campaigns, relationships with social media influencers, or successful email campaigns.
EDMs We have a great Shopify plug-in that allows us to create and send lovely email marketing campaigns to a list of about 200 customers quickly and easily. We have several sign-up forms/popups on our website encouraging subscription your our emails for 25% off a first order.
Google AdWords We used Google AdWords previously and saw a great uptick of traffic from this. It definitely works! Unfortunately for us it wasn’t quite profitable so we turned it off until we had the time to get it right. With the right expert (we know some great freelancers/agencies) it could work really well.
INSTAGRAM— Ads, Affiliates, Sponsored Giveaways, We’ve built a really great community on Instagram through our affiliate program. We have over 200+ reps who get a 20% discount code to offer to their friends, family, and followers. When someone makes a purchase with their codes, they receive 10% commission. Its given us a large amount of exposure, we’ve gained many followers with minimal cost. We also sponsor most giveaways that are requested of us— we offer a prize (that usually costs a total of about $4) and usually gain about 100 followers plus content from winners who share photos with us. When we first started we sent gear to about 8 influencers with followings of between 6K-60K followers. This was a really positive way to launch our store and would be a great strategy to boost sales in the future.
FACEBOOK We post regularly to facebook, run facebook ads, and even launched our business by posting and engaging in relevant groups on Facebook (Dogs Who Hike, etc.).
What is your cost of customer acquisition? Our cost of customer acquisition varies greatly from $1 to $100. We are really testing many channels and products and still working on finding the right formula!
Do you have recurring customers? A few!
Why are you selling the business? I am selling the business because I have started a new (dream) job which doesn’t allow me to invest the proper time to get to continue testing and find the magic formula to get Buddy & Riley to its full profitable potential. Its such an incredible business opportunity, I’d love to see someone take it and run which is why I’m asking pretty much just what I’ve invested into the company so far.
