Description

Cedar and Needle Fabric is an online fabric store catering to trend watching quilters,makers, crafters and sewing enthusiasts that has been operating on Shopify for 3 years, prior to that on another plartform for one year. It is currently in the closing down stages so the inventory is low. Read on to see the reasons for closing/selling.

We are primarily an online business with the occasional pop up shop and craft market presence which was very helpful in engaging the local customer base.

The consistent feedback I received from the store was that it was curated beautifully-with a selection of fabric geared toward the younger, trend-savvy makers. Many of my customers turned out to be business owners themselves, sewists making children's clothing, accessories and home decor. I also have consistently positive reviews on customer service.

It should be noted that I also ran an Etsy store for almost the entire time I had this store up and running. This did pose inventory challenges but the double exposure literally doubled the sales.

Shopify suggested the sale of this store be at the listed price of $13,707 US based on its traffic and sales. I am very willing to consider all reasonable offers, and will include at least half of the inventory left, which as of October 26th 2017 is valued at approximately $5000 CAN.

Why should someone buy this store?

I have put thousands of hours into building this store and have been running the business for 4 years and have a lot of knowledge to share. The fantastic thing about the platform is it is so user friendly and easy to add new products to. Getting paid by shopify is quick and easy. Shipping the bundles is super easy with the built in shipping app with Canada Post, or USPS, or any other shipping company you choose. No waiting in line and the customer receives direct emails with tracking info and shipping updates. I feel our store has a higher profile than the other limited number on online stores selling quilting and crafting fabric because it has been curated to only sell very popular fabrics. I have received this feedback many times and when I announced I was closing and looking for a buyer to my customers they were disappointed due to losing the wonderful selection that I have.

How can the future owner improve the business?

The reason I am selling and closing my store is because I also own a very busy flower and gift shop and am also a mother. I began this business as a possible way to leave my retail store, which employs 12 and requires a lot of HR work. The difference in the workload is incomparable. With fabric, all I had to do was list it, advertise it on social media, sell it, cut and package it and mail it! The paperwork is easy too. Since I own the flower shop with a partner and we are in a retail space with a lease, I realised I had to let something go and this was the easiest one to let go of, reluctantly though I assure you!

What I didn't have time to invest in was the necessary blog and stronger social media and newsletter presence that I feel could have brought a much greater level of traffic. I have studied other competitive stores in Canada and the US and see so much potential for anyone who had more time to keep the site fresh and to run promotions, contests and giveaways.

I know the SEO and online advertising with GoogleAdWords could also be improved upon as I literally did nothing with AdWords and SEO research due to having limited time.

What work have you put into the store?

I spent thousands of hours creating categories and visual images to represent the categories as well as uploading the products and finding ways to link this to the Facebook store, to use the shopify POS app and set up shipping categories. I also improved terms and conditions.
