New Zealand designed DOOSH was launched in the mid-'90s and rapidly became popular in the club and music scene - known for its unique style and pants. In the '00s it expanded on that popularity and evolved into a broader appeal streetwear label adding denim, jackets, hoodies, tops, dresses, knitwear and so on. By the end of the '00s the pair of brands were delivering a multimillion-dollar wholesale revenue stream to their parent company. However, lingering effects of the GFC and management/operational missteps along with poor cash flow/AR management led to the DOOSH brand and associated IP being acquired by the current owner in 2012 (and Sable and Minx ultimately being acquired in 2017).

DOOSH pants have remained the core of the DOOSH brand and well-loved styles like the Toby, Scratch 3/4, Roadrunner and Dalston are still very popular today, years after their original introductions - still attracting new customers and driving repeat. In 2013, the present owner reproduced a core set of DOOSH women's and men's styles and the brand was moved to primarily an online business model (online exclusively since early 2016). It has traded profitably with that same dozen or so styles since that time - run by one person, part-time, producing a supplemental income.

The current commercial operation is based strictly on:

The above set of assets,

A positive, established relationship with a reliable and trustworthy manufacturer - 10+ years with these brands, familiar with the history and logistics of recent operations, and;

The part-time effort the current owner allocates.

Financials and traffic

During the period Feb 2017 to Sept 2017, operational effort was substantially reduced due to an unrelated business project owner engaged in. In the context of 4 years of sales data, this is obvious and additional Shopify data reflecting this can be shared with interested parties.

AVERAGE GROSS PROFIT/MONTH is estimated based on revenue less COGS. Sales derived from the owners part-time efforts have been approx. NZD $224K per year (excl. GST) over the last four years and COGS over the last 4 years has averaged approx 25% of revenue. Average monthly revenue in USD is NZD $224K * 0.74 exch rate / 12 months = USD $13,800. An estimate of average gross profit per month would be USD $13,800 - (25% * $13,800) = USD $10,360

Q & A

Why should someone buy this store?

DOOSH (est. ~1995) - known and loved by kiwis for its pants and unique style, is currently run as a profitable, part-time, home-based, online retail operation. This is your chance to bring your own vision to a head start decades in the making! An opportunity to acquire DOOSH and its sister brand, Sable & Minx (est. 2007), including social media assets with over 18,000 followers, a customer database (8000+), mailing list (8000+), fully operational Shopify store, over 500 PAD System pattern files and associated specs, registered trademarks, logos, lookbooks, imagery and so on. Some stock is available.

Sales (incl. GST) approx. NZD $1.03M total over past 4 years, approx. NZD $100K total in the past 4 months.

Many low-hanging growth opportunities with the potential to quickly yield a substantial six figure income - run anywhere in New Zealand - detail shared with interested parties upon request.

See the lookbooks: https://lookbooks.nz

Considering all serious offers.

How can the future owner improve the business?

The current low-overhead mode could be retained and enhanced to create a substantial six-figure income which could be operated anywhere in New Zealand with good internet connectivity, a regular courier pick-up service and 50 - 100 sqm of suitable space for stock storage and dispatch. It may be possible to outsource the entire warehousing and dispatch process to a 3rd party in the future (e.g. Fulfillment by Amazon).

DOOSH can be a lot more than the current black drill pants without straying too far from its strengths. Customers ask repeatedly for - grey? chocolate? denim? stretch? hoodies? the iconic black knit, hooded "Snowsleeper" longline cardi? etc. The demand and customer enthusiasm is there.

The opportunity to take DOOSH back to a million dollar brand is within reach and should easily be achieved via a few simple improvements managed well. Here are some basic ideas:

Updated pictures and styling (much of the current imagery is 6-10 years old)

Pant remakes with elastane content - this would improve probability of fit and may alleviate the need for ½ sizes in some cases

Re-introduction of often requested grey and chocolate colour-ways (in addition to black)

Re-introduction of denim

Consistent operation

A stronger and regularly active social media presence - coupled with an online chat function to close sales

Uniform sales

Website refinement including better recommendations on establishing a good fit by style

SEO, SEM, ad spend optimization
