Mocc Socks started in 2010 and we (the current owners) bought the business in 2016. We were looking for an apparel business to buy because we wanted to create our own apparel company and thought the best way to get experience and understand E-Commerce was to learn through practice. We have come away with three main takeaways that will allow us to build our next company.
- The tools within Shopify and the tools we use to supplement it are incredibly easy to use and infinitely scaleable. This makes the learning curve for E-Commerce go way down and allows us to spend more money in areas we don’t have expertise.
- Manufacturing apparel overseas is not complicated if you are able to be incredibly specific about how you want your product to look, feel, fit, etc. The logistics of shipping and paying for inventory are not as overwhelming as they first seem and the language barrier is over exaggerated.
- Niche online retail is the only way for apparel companies to survive and grow in the age of Amazon. We found success by resisting the urge to acquire a massive customer base and instead focused on offering the best customer service and producing relevant content to our loyal tribe. Our next apparel brand is definitely going to have a wider scope than Mocc Socks but we are going to continue to compete in a niche, high-end market where brand experience matters and is much harder to scale and replicate.
