An online quilting shop, we sell fabric from the bolt and precut units (like 5" square 'charm packs', 10" square 'layer cakes' etc).
I started the shop a couple of years ago after getting frustrated with the functionality of most fabric shops online (they're still pretty bad!) and the ranges available in the UK, particularly of Moda and Robert Kaufman quilting precuts. Last year I had a baby, and therefore until the last two weeks have had no time to spend on the management or maintenance of the site. However, on every occasion that I have invested even a couple of hours of work in to it, the sales have come in straight away.
The other challenge I have faced is having the space for stock and processing orders, as I live in a small flat in London, and storage unit space is at a premium so difficult to make it cost effective.
I have been running a clearance sale to get rid of stock, and whilst doing so have received several heartfelt emails from customers about how much they love the store, the range, and the functionality. Most online fabric shops are very badly designed and don't work on mobile, so that has been our main differentiator. If you love the sewing/quilting community and beautiful fabrics, and have the time and space to dedicate to it, this could be a great business!
Buyer can also have whatever stock remains at cost price, and I will facilitate introductions with wholesalers. I shall also spend the time to run through everything, and be on hand for guidance for handover period.
If you have the interest, time and space to do it justice, this could be a really good business. I have built it to where it is by literally spending just a couple of days in it this year (I had a baby and didn't have the time!)
By having the space to store the fabric, properly cut and process it, and time to invest in it in order to get a higher turnover of stock and newer ranges in to excite customers
